- Receives written requisitions from physicians for cytology laboratory tests. Accepts and/or rejects cytology specimens according to established protocol. Makes appropriate specimen accessioning entries/corrections, if necessary.
- Prepares, filters, and changes reagents and solutions used in the laboratory for specimen preparation. Marks slides and containers, according to procedure, for permanent specimen identification. Prepares slides of the various types of Cytology specimens according to established methods, exhibiting knowledge of appropriate reagents, solutions and laboratory machines for each type. Stains slides with the staining method best suited for specimen interpretation and according to protocol. Covers lips slides, manually or by machine.
- Records specimen measurements and descriptions on requisition form and/or in laboratory computer system, according to established procedures. Verifies all aspects of cytology specimen preparation against accepted quality control standards. Maintains records and reports unusual requests or results to the supervisor.
- Microscopically examines gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration biopsy specimens for pathology. Makes cytologic diagnoses. Documents on the requisition and/or in the laboratory computer system the specimen adequacy, the diagnoses. Proofreads all report details for accuracy. Refers cases to pathologist review according to regulatory agency mandates.
- Maintains case quantity and quality records in compliance with regulatory agency mandates.
- Maintains knowledge of current developments in the field of Cytology. Completes NYSDOH mandated annual number of hours of continuing education; participates in CMS approved proficiency tests.
- Maintains laboratory equipment in good working condition and performs minor repairs. Monitors levels of reagents, solutions and other supplies needed for specimen preparation. Notifies supervisor or appropriate others to reorder supplies or arrange equipment repair/replacement.
- Adheres to the safety and infection control policies of the laboratory, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
